It is crucial for diabetic patients to check and manage their glucose levels daily, despite the time it can take from completing daily activities. The feet can typically be at risk in people who have diabetes, and this can be a result of the inability to feel sensations related to the feet. It is important to look for existing cuts, bruises, or scrapes. Some patients prefer to use a mirror to look at the sole of the foot. Diabetic foot care begins with washing and drying the feet daily, followed by using a good moisturizer on the entire foot except for the toes. It is common for diabetic patients to have poor circulation, and this can make it difficult for sores on the foot to heal. Foot ulcers are cuts or wounds on the feet that have become infected, and must be treated immediately to avoid possible gangrene. If you are diabetic, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who properly treats and offers helpful management tips.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. If you are suffering from diabetes or have any other concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Thomas Tran from Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

Causes of Heel Pain

When you pound your feet on hard surfaces during sports, running, or other activities, the heels take the brunt of this pressure. It’s not surprising that they will begin to hurt. The most common heel pain complaint is from plantar fasciitis, where the band of tissue that connects the heel to the toes becomes inflamed. Other heel problems include stress fractures, nerve entrapment, and heel pad syndrome, which can be the result of aging or repetitive stress. Achilles tendonitis, pain in the back of heel, occurs when a tendon that attaches the heel to the leg bone becomes inflamed, stretched or even ruptured. Other causes of heel pain include wearing shoes with poor cushioning, tight calf muscles, and sudden inward or outward turning of the feet. Landing hard on the heels, especially from a height, can also bruise or even fracture the bones. If your heel pain continues or worsens, it is best to consult with a podiatrist for a thorough examination of the area affected and appropriate treatment options.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Dr. Thomas Tran of Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Children Can Experience Heel Pain Too

It may be difficult for you to know if your child is having heel pain, because it isn’t often associated with children. However, certain conditions that cause heel pain can afflict the young, even if they don’t know how to properly communicate their distress. Sever’s disease, for instance, is a form of heel pain that stems from irritation to the growth plate in the heels of growing children. Children can also develop plantar fasciitis from overuse of the heel or by wearing shoes that don’t fit. This condition is a painful inflammation of the plantar fascia tissue where it connects to the heel on the sole of the feet. Active children can also develop tiny stress fractures of the heel bone which can occur gradually over time and be quite painful. There are certain clues your child’s condition may provide, if you know what to look for. If your child limps or changes the way they walk or run, cuts back on physical activities, complains that their feet or heels feel odd or stiff, or that something is stuck in their shoe, they may have a painful heel condition. It is suggested to make an appointment for your child with a podiatrist to have your child’s condition diagnosed and treated properly.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Thomas Tran of Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

An excess of uric acid in the blood can lead to the painful condition that is known as gout. Uric acid can come from eating foods that have high levels of purines. There are specific types of foods to avoid that can lead to gout attacks. These can include shellfish, red meat, and drinks that have large amounts of sugar. Additionally, there are foods that can be eaten that can possibly prevent and manage gout. These consist of cherries which have anti-inflammatory properties, and fresh or frozen juices. It  can help to eat foods that are rich in vitamin C, and research has shown drinking coffee may decrease the risk of getting gout. Some patients prefer to eat foods that are plant-based, and staying hydrated is beneficial in controlling gout. If you have developed this condition, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can guide you toward the right treatment options.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Thomas Tran from Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

Corns 101

A corn is a small, hardened area of skin that often develops on the outside of the pinky toe or on top of the toes. A soft corn generally forms between the toes, but any type of corn can cause discomfort. Most corns develop as a result of excess friction, and this may happen due to wearing shoes or socks that are too tight. The corn will gradually diminish when the friction or rubbing is ceased. Wearing a cushioned pad on top of the corn may help to relieve some pain that often accompanies a corn. There are some patients who find it helpful to soak the affected foot in warm water as this can soften the skin. It is important to leave the corn alone and refrain from cutting it with toenail trimmers or scissors. If you have a corn or experience recurring corns, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can help you with proper treatment techniques and offer effective preventative methods.

Corns can make walking very painful and should be treated immediately. If you have questions regarding your feet and ankles, contact Dr. Thomas Tran of Southwestern Foot & Ankle Associates, P.C.. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Corns: What Are They? And How Do You Get Rid of Them?
Corns are thickened areas on the skin that can become painful. They are caused by excessive pressure and friction on the skin. Corns press into the deeper layers of the skin and are usually round in shape.

Ways to Prevent Corns
There are many ways to get rid of painful corns such as:

  • Wearing properly fitting shoes that have been measured by a professional
  • Wearing shoes that are not sharply pointed or have high heels
  • Wearing only shoes that offer support

Treating Corns

Although most corns slowly disappear when the friction or pressure stops, this isn’t always the case. Consult with your podiatrist to determine the best treatment option for your case of corns.
